I get my ideas for my paintings from sketches and doodles. Every once in a while I will see an image in these doodles, much like you may see a face in clouds or Elvis in a potato chip. It's called pareidolia. I turn those sketches into paintings.
In this particular sketch, I saw a witch holding a raven.
The sides of the canvas are just as important as the front.
